The Yaegaki Gion Festival, held every year on August 4 and 5, 20 mikoshi (portable shrines) from over 10 towns are paraded in a special style, accompanied by the sounds of flutes and taiko drums. Your heart is sure to flutter when you hear the powerful shouting as the mikoshi are being carried.
Another unique aspect of the Gion Festival is that the mikoshi carriers are covered in cold water. You definitely don’t want to miss the spectacle of a fully filled giant water truck drenching the parade.
Also, in the Gion Festival, the rule which prevented women from participating was absolved, and a women’s only mikoshi parade will also be held, a rare sight anywhere in Japan. On the evening of the 4th, a group of hearty women will carry 10 mikoshi, trying best to not lose to the men.
The highlight of the event will be on the morning of the 5th, in which 20 mikoshi from 10 towns will be assembled in front of Yokaichiba Elementary School and paraded around the town, accompanied by the festival’s musical performers. The event reaches its climax in the evening, in which all of the mikoshi are assembled at Yaegaki Shrine.

In Kisarazu, which has flourished as a port town since long ago, the Kisarazu Port Festival originally began in 1948 to honor the ancestors who built the ports and laid the foundation for the city’s prosperity. Since then, on the 14th and 15th of August each year, Kisarazu is filled with visitors who have come to see the city’s greatest festival.
The Yassai Mossai Dance is held on the first day of the Port Festival. The venue, Fujimi-dori, which is located along the west exit of Kisarazu station, is filled with the dancers’ cries of “ossa, ossa, ossa” and people who have come to watch the dancers.
The words “yassai mossai” are the lyrics from the Kisarazu Jinku, a folk song of the area. “Ossa” is a response in the local dialect expressing agreement, and means “let’s understand each other.” At the Yassai Mossai festival, people of all ages come to enjoy dance together.
Additionally, visitors from inside and outside the prefecture, seeking the beauty painted upon the summer night sky will come to see the 10,000 fireworks at this year’s Kisarazu Port Festival Fireworks Display.
